Though we have not yet achieved our target on GlobalGiving, we recently held our very first local fundraiser. It was successful and managed to raise usd7525 which we have ploughed to this project (Jijenge Transition Program). The proceeds will help transition our survivors of sexual and domestic violence and their children who are sheltered at Agatha Amani House. 104 people supported/donated to our cause and 78 of them attended the event physically.
We have been able to start supporting survivors. Zebidah "not her real name" was supported in getting a Job placement and she has also joined Theology school where she is taking a certificate course in Bible and theology. Her monthly classes are being paid through this transition fund. AAH supported her with a startup kit that included house furnishings, rent, and daycare fees for her baby girl and food packages.
Women who are next in transition are getting ready especially with skills development. An exciting new initiative for our survivors and staff has been the commencement of university level classes made possible by EBU, the European Business University of Luxembourg, who has provided scholarships to all our survivors and staff. 6 of our residents are taking the online courses. 2 of the ladies are taking Marketing management, 3 are taking business management and 1 is taking business sustainability certificate courses. Currently, we are almost through with the courses and our residents have already learnt a lot. We have been holding presentations on a biweekly basis where the residents pursuing the courses share what they have learnt with each other and the others who are not taking the courses. Besides gaining knowledge about doing business, their knowledge in English improves. As they get more comfortable with this, it raises the residents' self-esteem. It is a wonderful step for not only their present but also the future.
We are also gratefull to our volunteers who ahve been to assisting our survivors with their classes and offering them tuition which has made it possible for the residents to succeed with their classes. We were able to also purchase a computer for the residents to use during their online classes.
We are hopefull that we continual to receive support towards this project that helps transition our ladies and would like to extend our gratitude to you all that have supportive with our work for our sisters and their children.
Happy Holidays and may you all be very blessed. And a Happy New Year.
