Summary

This Project will help to transform and transition 52 women; survivors of sexual and domestic violence sheltered at Agatha Amani House shelter in Naivasha, Kenya, through livelihood empowerment. The initiative seeks to prevent them from leaving the shelter, economically inadequate which heightens the risk of going back to harmful relationships or being taken advantage of. It will make them regain control over their lives and instill in them motivation to reclaim their positions.

Challenge

Gains made by survivors while at our Shelter are always at risk when they get back to the community. This must be safeguarded before they relapse and get back to harmful relationships or even ingress into other crimes just to fend for their families. Following the impact of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the safe spaces and opportunities for women and girls are fast decreasing, and threatening their survival when they transition back to the community!

Solution

The project will support livelihoods empowerment for the survivors and their collectives as they go back to the community; through 3 months rent and basic household equipment, small seed grants to start business/vocational skills training depending on an individual's interest and capability. This will be coupled with entrepreneurship, business and employability skills. Our committed staff will continue mentoring the women for both personal and business development beyond the shelter life.

Long-Term Impact

The project seeks to economically empower 150 women, survivors of sexual and domestic violence while inside and outside of our shelter and build a movement of women who all share a common story of resilience, strength and the will to make a better life for themselves and others.
