Your involvement with us and your generous gifts for this project has meant Deaf Leaders have been empowered!
Deaf individuals now have improved self-esteem and are exposed to more life opportunities. Deaf Leaders are playing important roles as Mentors to other deaf persons around them - building their confidence, and ensuring they are more engaged with their local communities.
Nzeve hosted a capacity development workshop for Deaf Leaders where they learnt how to run the deaf clubs in the surrounding rural districts. Eight Deaf Leaders from five different clubs came together to learn about effective leadership, including skills of activity planning, reporting, budgeting and the use of interactive resources.
One participant said: “I am excited about the new skills I learnt today. This will help me to lead more interesting and fun club sessions. I am also happy because I now know how to do reporting and budgeting, and this will help me when I am looking for employment.”
The training will impact more than the eight Deaf Leaders who attended the meeting. 178 deaf youth attend the deaf clubs that create space for deaf youth to learn new things, such as business and livelihoods skills. This helps some to find employment and others to start small businesses. Discussions on health-related issues led by Deaf Mentors ensure that everyone attending the club has an understanding of health and wellness information and access to healthcare resources when needed. Deaf clubs provide a support network where the Deaf Leaders inspire, encourage and support others to engage in their communities and lead more inclusive and fulfilled lives.
Training of Deaf Leaders is addressing the lack of representation and meaningful participation of the deaf community in national, provincial and grass root discussions. Your continued gifts help us to train more Deaf Leaders who can reach deaf youth effectively.
