The education program to strengthen the health of families in the Tsotsil towns, where Sanando Heridas has been working for 17 years, is of great relevance. Its objective is to promote attitudes, habits and knowledge that promote a healthy life among 850 preschool, primary and secondary school students, as well as among teachers, educational committees of 17 rural schools, mothers and allied groups.
Families in the care locations do not have adequate information about healthy habits, people have adopted risk behaviors, such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle or consumption of harmful substances, which has increased the risk of developing preventable diseases, late diagnosis of diseases, increased medical costs, health inequality as well as poor management of emergency situations, which has had a profound impact on their quality of life.
Educating to prevent diseases is essential for several reasons: Improves quality of life, prevention allows people to adopt healthy habits that reduce the risk of diseases, improving their general well-being. Reduces health costs, preventing diseases is cheaper than treating them. Promotes personal autonomy, promotes a culture of health, prevention education establishes a solid foundation for a culture of health at the individual and collective level.
Educating to prevent diseases not only has an immediate impact, but generates lasting effects that transform the individual, social and economic health of communities. In the long term, this contributes to a healthier, more productive and resilient society, reducing inequalities and creating a culture of well-being that benefits everyone.
