Planning for our upcoming workshops is underway as ASAP prepares for our in-person meeting in Kigali, Rwanda on November 4th, 2017. Future workshops will last 3 days each and will feature a menu of course offerings. We piloted our workshops training pathologists on the pathologic staging of breast, cervix, colorectal, and prostate cancers, four cancers that are commonly diagnosed in sub-Saharan Africa. The workshop expansion will expand the course offerings to include sessions on lymphomas, gastric / esophageal cancers, ovarian / endometrial cancers, and head and neck cancers. These cancers are commonly seen within sub-Saharan Africa, and have the capacity to be treated in these settings.
We have a couple of other updates as well!
Members of African Strategies for Advancing Pathology (ASAP) and workshop faculty prepared and submitted a manuscript outlining the case-testing process used to refine the case material for our workshops included within the research phase of this project. This manuscript has been accepted for publication by the African Society for Laboratory Medicine. We will be sure to share this publication with our donors once it’s been published!
In addition, ASAP Project Coordinator Stephanie Ayers gave a presentation on the three workshops held to date at the Posner Center for International Development in Denver, Colorado on July 27th, 2017. This presentation included an overview of the research design, the results of our research, and our next steps moving forward. The presentation was well received by Denver’s international development community. We have also submitted a manuscript for publication outlining this research and will share updates on the status of this publication in the upcoming months.
We are excited to continue to plan these workshops and bring them to fruition! Our next update will include a debrief of our in-person planning meeting. We can’t wait to share details of this meeting with all of you. Thanks for your continued support!
