Over the last months, we have been undertaking series of activities aimed at empowering communities with awareness creation to abandon FGM, child marriage and other harmful practices. We have held dialogues with 80 religious leaders in West Pokot and Samburu counties to spearhead the campaign to end FGM in these counties which also have the highest prevalence of teenage pregnancies in Kenya. In Nairobi, Kenya's capital city, we are engaging Muslim religious leaders to de-link FGM from religion. This is in addition to engagement of survivors and the youth to understand the effects of FGM and the need to protect young girls from this brutality.
In addition to awareness creation, we have undertaken response to child protection in emergencies through provision of cash transfers to families adversely affected by drought in Samburu county. This is in realization that we cannot fight FGM alone especially when families are facing risk of starvation. during emergencies like drought, young girls are the source of hope to many families as they are traded for dowry which is used to feed the remaining family members. As such, to address FGM and other harmful practices effectively, we partnered with UNICEF Kenya in providing 200 households with cash transfers and undertaking case management to protect young girls from FGM and early, forced and child marriage.
In realization that less than eight years are remaining to attain the global target of ending FGM by 2030, we are constantly on the road, engaging communities through dialogues, sensitizations and school mentorships. We believe ending FGM is now more urgent than never. This is why we are coming up with innovative approaches and programs that accelerate efforts to end the practice by 2030. We appeal to donors and our valuable supporters to continue supporting us through their generpous donations because without you, we can't do what we are doing; and with your support, we will be able to end FGM in the world by 2030.
