Project Report | Mar 12, 2019
Community English Programme

By Tim Pare | Founder Tea Leaf Trust

Hello,

Thanks for supporting us, being interested in what we do and what progress we have made on this project.

This fundraiser is to train 155 students of our main diploma to teach 2,325 children Basic English for free. Although it has not started yet at our centre in Nuwara Eliya, in the heart of the Sri Lanka tea plantations - we have been running it at our first centre in Maskeliya.

Each year in Maskeliya, in term one (January to March), we train our 18 to 24 year old students how to manage a classroom, encourage and motivate children as well as keep their attention as well as how to deliver amazing, interactive and fun lessons.

Then, in terms two and three (May to July and September to December), our school closes on Wednesday afternoons and all of our students, managed by the 2nd year advanced diploma, head out to remote schools in their communities to teach Basic English for two hours.

In this way, in Maskeliya, every week we work at 31 tea estate government schools to teach over 2,300 children.

For the children, it is a great boost to their confidence in the vital subject.

For the students, who feel worthless when they join us as they have not achieved their parents' dream of going to University, they begin to understand their worth and as teachers experience a new level of respect in their community.

For schools, they get extra support in a subject where they have a chronic lack of skills. Only 2 out of 25 English Teacher can actually speak English.

I will keep this page updated for this specific project, but wanted to write about the success we have already had with this project at a different centre - it really is win-win development.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for supporting.

With best wishes,

Tim
