Dear friends and supporters,
In our quarterly report last October, “In sorrow, but with hope” we spoke of the loss of our dear Jeanne Betsock (“Ginger”) Stillman, co-founder of PPAF and of this GlobalGiving project. She was such a positive influence, in so many ways.
To honor her life and work, our colleagues in Hinche have given the name “JBS Workshop” to a now nearly completed site for making solar cookers, selling them and holding training sessions. The workshop building is solid and secure, with solar power for lighting and rechargeable tools, and with a good rooftop for cooking and demonstrations. You can see the progress in the cover photo above, in several of the attached photos, and in a little video of Aline teaching. Most recently, PPAF is covering installation costs for the solar panels and related equipment given by Tom Hallquist. Ginger’s spirit continues in our hearts and hands.
Importing the Haines and Hallquist solar cookers has been impossible for a year, owing to a terrible security situation, chiefly in Port-au-Prince, brought about by heavily-armed gangs. Elsewhere, as in Hinche and Jacmel, higher prices, limited supplies, and worry predominate.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Our colleagues in Hinche have experimented with instructions from the internet and locally available materials to make solar cookers from plywood, aluminum foil, Styrofoam, sheet metal, etc. Comparison tests prove these solar cookers perform quite well, even if not equal to the efficiency of the imported kits. An introductory supply of locally-made cookers is now available. Customers are beginning to visit and place orders.
In Jacmel, our colleagues have engaged in solar cooking demonstrations, teaching, and preparing pots of food at the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC) and elsewhere. The meals include rice, vegetables, starches, and sauces of chicken or fish. Our lead colleague in Jacmel has illustrated this in an attached short video.
Responding to invitations, the Jacmel team has conducted events at a large school, and with a university class, young women in a community group, and youth members of the Jacmel Rotary. As senior adviser to the solar cooking classes at ACFFC, our lead colleague has led a clinic for repairs and teaching to assist students who previously received PPAF donations of solar cookers.
We in PPAF are delighted to share this report’s information on progress. Going forward, we want to expand the work and advance small business opportunities, including assembly and distribution of solar cookers.
We want to acknowledge and thank our collaborators for their support to PPAF’s work, especially our friends at Haines Solar Cookers, LLC; Solar Oven Reflectors, LLC; Solar Education Project/GDS; Solar Cookers International; and Konbit pou Developman Cotes de Fer. We are in regular contact with our dear colleagues in Hinche and Jacmel, and we look forward to eventual improvements from the current terrible situation in the country.
It is our donors and friends who make PPAF’s work possible. Thank you very much!
