The Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT), has recognised the urgency of building a dedicated elephant orphanage, that will focus solely on the wellbeing & care of the growing numbers of orphaned or displaced elephants in South Africa and surrounding countries. It is our responsibility to ensure that we are adequately equipped to accept further orphans in a controlled environment designed for best practice in elephant care.
Over the past four years, the WCT has assisted with the funding and support of orphaned elephants at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC), who under the guidance of the team at Jabulani, welcomed any orphaned or displaced elephant calves that have needed a place of rehabilitation and care. The new location of the orphanage will place the baby elephants close to a herd of elephants that can provide much-needed security and a possible family structure which is vital to their wellbeing
With rhino poaching becoming more difficult for poachers, they are turning to elephants which are not guarded as rhinos are, and in greater numbers. The elephant poaching statistics are sadly rising with each year that passes. Elephant calves are a lot more complex to raise than a rhino calf, they need a family structure to provide emotional stability. The Jabulani herd can and have proven to accept orphans into their herd, which can provide a stepping stone to a second opportunity at life.
