Summary

Join us in our mission to protect the Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) from the river ecosystems of Northern Western Ghats, Maharashtra, India. These vital apex predators are facing severe threats from habitat loss, pollution, and human conflict across the globe. Your support can help us secure their future and ensure the health of their habitat.

Challenge

Muggers, evolved 200 million years ago, are close dinosaur relatives and symbolize both nurturing and destructive forces in river ecosystems. Despite surviving the mass extinction 66 million years ago, they now face threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and pollution, making them Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Without effective conservation efforts, these ancient reptiles are at a risk of being driven to extinction by human actions, potentially triggering a new mass extinction.

Solution

Despite its crucial role in river ecosystems, the Mugger Crocodile majorly remains data deficient in areas like population size, distribution, and food preferences. This project seeks to fill these gaps and develop conservation strategies for its habitats in the northern Western Ghats. Continuous community involvement and education efforts will be key to minimizing human-wildlife unpleasant interactions and ensuring the long-term conservation of the species and its habitats.

Long-Term Impact

This project aims to create a sustainable conservation model with lasting benefits. By restoring and protecting habitats, it will not only support the Mugger Crocodile but also a wide range of other species like fish, reptiles, birds and smaller mammals, fostering healthier ecosystems. Engaging local communities and reducing human-crocodile unpleasant interactions will ensure healthy coexistence. The project will help to devise appropriate conservation action plans for Mugger and its habitats.
