The Mysterious Crocodiles of Gavtale

By Akshay Gawade | Project Leader

Landscape of Pond and Sacred Grove
Landscape of Pond and Sacred Grove

As part of my work, I travel extensively, exploring diverse landscapes to study biodiversity and assess conservation opportunities. During one such journey, I stumbled upon a remarkable discovery—an ancient pond hiding a mysterious population of freshwater crocodiles.

Nestled deep within Gavtale, a quiet village in Maharashtra’s Dapoli block, lies a sacred grove steeped in myth and mystery. At its heart, a serene pond conceals an astonishing secret—an enduring population of freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris). Their presence in this secluded water body has perplexed generations. No one knows where they came from or how long they have been here. Yet, one fact remains undeniable: they are thriving.

Contrary to their fearsome reputation, these crocodiles have peacefully coexisted with the villagers for as long as anyone can remember. Not a single human or cattle has ever been harmed. Instead, the villagers regard them with reverence, believing them to be the guardians of the sacred grove.

The mystery deepens—as smaller crocodiles have been observed, confirming that they are breeding here. But how? What sustains them in this seemingly limited ecosystem?

The pond does not appear to have an abundant supply of fish, yet the crocodiles persist, defying scientific understanding. What do they eat? How have they survived for generations without any recorded migration? These unanswered questions make this one of the most intriguing wildlife enigmas in India.

For the past five years, AERF (Applied Environmental Research Foundation) has been collaborating with the local community from this village to protect and restore this unique landscape and its pond. Beyond being a vital habitat for this charismatic species, the pond also plays a crucial role in replenishing the groundwater table, ensuring a steady water supply for the surrounding villages throughout the year. As the mystery unfolds, AERF is now intensifying its focus on protecting these incredible creatures and their habitat. Through scientific studies, community-driven conservation efforts, and awareness campaigns, we aim to unravel the secrets of the Gavtale crocodiles while ensuring their continued survival.

The time to act is now. With increasing environmental pressures, the need to protect this extraordinary population is more urgent than ever. Will we uncover the truth behind their existence? Will we safeguard their home for future generations? With your support, we can turn this enigma into an incredible conservation success story. Join us in preserving one of nature’s most captivating secrets.
