Imagine driving along a rain-soaked road and suddenly encountering a crocodile.
This isn’t a rare sight anymore—it’s becoming alarmingly common in India (especially in Northern Western Ghats region). In July 2024, a Mugger crocodile casually wandered through a busy road in one of the villages in Maharashtra, frightening residents and travellers. It wasn’t a one-off incident. Similar sightings have been reported in various parts of India, raising serious concerns about the fragile balance between humans and wildlife.
These crocodiles aren’t venturing onto roads by choice. Monsoon floods are inundating their riverine habitats, while rampant urbanization is swallowing their homes. They are forced to navigate an unfamiliar, dangerous world—our world. This increased human-crocodile interaction poses significant risks: frightened residents, the potential for accidents, and the very real danger to both humans and these displaced reptiles.
It was against this backdrop that we launched our GlobalGiving Campaign. This initiative seeks to address the root causes of these conflicts. The funding will enable us to study why crocodiles are increasingly displaced, identify critical conflict zones, and implement solutions to prevent future encounters.
Our goal is not just to protect crocodiles but to protect people too. When a crocodile appears on a road, it’s more than a spectacle—it’s a symptom of a deeper ecological crisis. Without intervention, these encounters will become more frequent, more dangerous, and more tragic.
We are calling on everyone to help us tackle this urgent issue. With your support, we are planning to search for the root causes and turn the situation in favour to both humans and animals. This is not just about crocodiles. It’s about saving an entire ecosystem—and ensuring a safer future for everyone who shares it.
Together, we can prevent a crisis from becoming a catastrophe.
