In the past decade, orphanages have increased by 500% in SE Asia but the number of orphans has decreased. Why? In Thailand, mainly because of poverty. Help us support reintegration of children from orphanages to families by supporting family-based transition homes. This program will provide support to the Thai social welfare system as they do not yet have a budget or staff to address this issue.
Up to 95% of children living in orphanages around Thailand have at least one parent who could care for them. Why are they in orphanages? Mainly due to poverty: the parents can't pay school fees and choose education over family (orphanages pay tuition fees). Thankfully, the Thai government is actively seeking to remedy this situation and get these kids back with their families and provide financial assistance so the children can remain with their families.
Since most of these children have grown up in large institutions, they need a transition home to learn how to live in a family again and begin to build a relationship with their biological parents. This project will provide support for children and parents during this transition time, empower parents to see the importance of their role in the child's life and give the children a voice in their own story.
This project will assist in the reintegration of Thai children into their families and communities. It will prevent attachment disorder, begin to heal the trauma caused by separation from their parents at a young age and give children a sense of belonging in their family and society. Children who grow up in families have better brain development, develop empathy and give back to their communities. They perform better in school, contribute to society and become better parents themselves.
