The first months of the school year have been busy and exciting for environmental education! We started the year off with the annual Environmental Day Fair, where Los Algarrobos and other local business shared their ecological products and activities to the greater community.
Then we got down to establishing some routines. We established the community garden and a schedule for beach clean -ups! The garden is now collecting some of its first harvests and beach clean-ups continue strong.
In the last month, we started two more fun projects! We prepared the soil and planted a (huge!!) school garden! This means that every student can participate in the gardening. And, the fifth, sixth, and seventh graders have each embarked in a class animal project. Sixth grade has quails, seventh grade has hamsters, and soon fifth graders will have guinea pigs. These projects are meant to study the reproductive cycle, the economic viability of raising the animals, and proper animal care, making them excellent examples of project based learning.
As the first semester comes to an end, we are looking forward to even more fun projects and activities in the second semester!
