Shelter, Safety, Strength: What We Built-Together

With the support of our donors, The Mustard Seed Mission has made significant progress in post-disaster recovery efforts following the severe earthquake and subsequent typhoons that impacted eastern Taiwan in 2024.

Thanks to timely contributions, we were able to initiate immediate emergency response, delivering food, clean water, and essential supplies to over 1,500 individuals in remote and severely affected communities, including those in Hualien and Taitung. In cases where access routes were blocked, local youth formed coordinated motorcycle relay teams to ensure supplies reached isolated areas promptly.

In the recovery phase, we focused on rebuilding household stability. This included the distribution of home repair subsidies, temporary housing assistance, and the replacement of key household items such as beds, refrigerators, and water tanks. These interventions particularly supported vulnerable populations, such as elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses, in regaining a sense of normalcy and security.

Furthermore, to enhance future resilience, we facilitated community-based disaster preparedness workshops. A total of 52 local residents participated in training sessions aimed at increasing knowledge and readiness for future emergencies, including landslides and earthquakes.

These outcomes were made possible through the collective efforts of local volunteers, partner organizations, and donor support. The impact of this project extended beyond material aid—it contributed to restoring social cohesion, promoting localized resilience, and reaffirming the importance of long-term preparedness strategies.

Waves of Destruction, Seeds of Resilience

The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) has always been dedicated to supporting families in need and helping them build resilience for the future. This year has brought particular challenges to communities in Taiwan. Following the April 3rd earthquake, a series of powerful typhoons—Gaemi, Krathon, and most recently, Kong-rey—have inflicted unprecedented damage on already fragile areas. The relentless rain and wind have destabilized the land, creating a series of natural disasters that continue to impact vulnerable families.

Our CEO, Jeffrey Li, shared that Taiwan’s increasingly fragile environment has compounded the damage, and recovery is expected to take longer than in the past. He emphasized that the path to rebuilding is arduous and requires sustained support from all sectors to ensure families can regain safety and stability. MSM’s unwavering commitment to both immediate relief and long-term recovery remains essential to bringing hope and aid to those who need it most.

Since April, eastern Taiwan has been severely affected, with each new storm worsening the situation. Typhoon Kong-rey, the largest to strike Taiwan in nearly 30 years, brought excessive rain and strong winds that triggered landslides and disrupted power and water supplies. Hard-hit areas like Zhuoxi Township in Hualien and Nan’an Village in Taitung are facing immense challenges, including damaged homes, broken pipelines, and widespread power outages.

Amid these conditions, MSM has activated our community support network, bringing together our relief team and local partners to deliver essential aid. Relief efforts have included bottled water, ready-to-eat meals, and other vital supplies to affected areas. In Jianshi Township, Hsinchu, where a landslide cut off access, our relief team collaborated with local youth, using motorcycles in a relay system to deliver supplies to isolated areas.

In Zhuoxi Township, Hualien, conditions have been particularly severe. Typhoon-triggered mudslides rushed into homes, causing extensive damage and disrupting essential services. Our teams braved flooded areas to deliver water and food, working alongside local volunteers to provide immediate care and support. One resident, Mrs. Chen, who has been battling cancer, saw her home in Nan’an buried in mud and debris. When the floodwater surged, she and her husband, who rely on temporary work, had only moments to gather her medication before evacuating. Now, facing the loss of their home of over 30 years, they confront an uncertain and challenging future.

Despite these hardships, MSM's commitment to ongoing relief remains unwavering. During Typhoon Kong-rey, we distributed over 200 boxes of essential supplies and opened four key food reserve locations to provide much-needed aid. Plans are also underway to support recovery efforts through our “Cash for Work” programs and to assess the need for household items and home repairs to help families rebuild their lives.

Rebuilding after such devastating events requires collective action. We invite you to stand with The Mustard Seed Mission and extend a helping hand to those affected.
