Dajun is a sixth-grade elementary school boy whose personality is serious and sensible. He knows that his parents work hard and he usually studies and writes homework by himself after school; also helps take care of his younger brother who is two years younger than him. Besides, he is an athlete who loves archery and has represented the school in the National Archery Championships with excellent results.

Last year, his father was injured in an accident and was unable to work, so the family's financial burden fell entirely on my mother. The meager income of the temporary cleaners in the restaurant could barely cover the food and necessities of a family of four; however, they could not pay the rent and they were forced to move out of their original accommodation.
Fortunately, the community worker of The Mustard Seed Mission knew this situation and assisted Dajun to apply for emergency financial aid and helped them find a temporary residence. It made the whole family breathe a sigh of relief, and the original sadness turned into a smile.

A Glimmer of Hope!

Most of the families served by The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) bread earner are engaged in manual labor or odd jobs for a living. The outbreak of the pandemic in Taiwan affects families which already struggling with financial issues. Once the bread earner in the disadvantaged families is tested positive, it directly affects the livelihood of the entire family because of being quarantined or the working hours reduced. If children are required to be quarantined at home, it would lead to more challenges for the family's finance, such as the extra meal expenses, and electricity; and the parents need to stay home to take care of their children which means they cannot work and get paid.
Xiaojie, one of the children supported by MSM, whose mother was unable to stand for long and was unable to lift heavy things due to illness. As a result, she can only do odd jobs to earn a meager wage. Xiaojie’s mother held three jobs. To Xiaojie, her mother is the strongest woman in the world. After Xiaojie was affected by COVID-19, her mother was also infected. Since they both were home quarantined, her mother was anxious day and night about the rent and living expenses!
Fortunately, social workers helped them apply for emergency relief funds and pandemic prevention supplies in the first place, so they were able to go through these difficulties.
MSM has a long history of helping vulnerable families in the community. When these families encounter natural disasters or family accidents, which lead to financial difficulties, we offer emergency relief funds to help them ease economic pressure and help them deal with the problems and challenges they may face.

Several 6 magnitude strong
#earthquakes occurred in
#Hualien and
#Taitung in these two days, causing serious disasters such as the collapse of buildings in the urban area.
The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) immediately launches disaster relief work in Hualien and provided food, daily supplies, and emergency relief funds. Besides, MSM opened its space in the Vocational Training Center as a temporary shelter for the affected families and people, caring for and accompanying people in the disaster area through difficult times.
Torbors Chyuan, director of the Social Assistance Department of MSM, said that MSM has a professional team responsible for community disaster prevention and relief services. On weekdays, the team is not only committed to cultivating the community’s response strategies to face disasters and organizing community disaster relief teams to simulate drills, etc., but also keeps abreast of any disaster situation at any time and provides immediate and nearby services through the community mutual aid network.
In response to the earthquake, the social worker drove a food bank transfer ven to Hualien and Taitung overnight with sufficient supplies for the post-earthquake responses. In addition to providing supplies to the people in the disaster area, MSM also provided emergency relief funds for affected people to apply for.
The relief funds will be issued to affected people after social workers finish the assessment. MSM’s Vocational Training Center in Hualien also became a temporary shelter for the affected people during the earthquake.
MSM reminds people immediately find a safe place to cover and take shelter on the spot when the earthquake shakes. Besides, MSM encourages people to prepare family disaster prevention kits and disaster prevention hoods and plan the ways to protect themselves in advance, and firmly secure items and furniture in their house.
