Imagine stepping into a classroom filled with students with eager faces, who are ready to learn about their bodies, yet they are unable to hear the sounds of your voice. In most schools in our rural community, these students are neglected their right to information related to their bodies, due to communication barriers.
Over the past months, our project has successfully collaborated with a special needs secondary school in Tanzania, focusing on girls with hearing impairment. Through engaging and accessible training methods like creative arts, we have imparted essential knowledge on menstruation and puberty. Using the beauty of sign language for communication, we've been able to connect with and educate 70 girls, breaking down barriers that they might have faced otherwise.
One of the most impactful aspects of the project has been teaching these girls how to create their own reusable sanitary pads using local materials. This not only ensures their access to sustainable menstrual products but also promotes self-reliance and independence. The girls have embraced this skill, and the lessons have been conducted consistently at their school for two days each month. This project has already begun to transform the lives of these girls, providing them with knowledge, practical skills, and a sense of empowerment.
As we continue to empower these girls, our project is about more than education; it's a journey of building a community of strength and self-belief where every voice, whether spoken or signed, is heard and valued.
