In view of the prevailing global health crisis owing to the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Zimconserve is initiating a project it has termed "Survival gardens" .The novel idea revolves upon the promotion of vegetable growing boxes and mandala gardens as a healthy way to counter the social distancing inhibitors that are in place to contain the escalation of the pandemic, while at the same combating malnutrition of citizens under lock-down.
As in all emergencies,Covid-19 caught the less disadvantaged families flat footed,They have since run out of food under lock down. In as much as restrictions are inevitable under the circumstances it is an inexcusable fact that human need food.
The project will introduce growing vegetable boxes and expand mandala beds, through the donation of seed packs ,garden tools ,growing boxes and training on how to grow seedlings,and how to build the boxes and mandala bed.To illustrate the concept, we have put in place a mandala bed and growing boxes at our local church for demonstration purposes . The growing box is a great and economical system of growing vegetables in wooden box and a mandala bed is a raised garden bed using keyhole patterns.
The project will meet the income,nutrition and social needs of the vulnerable people we serve. To sum it up,the world is in the midst of a catastrophe akin to those experienced before such as the global flue pandemic,world wars 1 and 2.Zimconserve has taken the lead,as they say evil prevails when good people do nothing.Therefore the onus is upon us all to halt the scourge in its tracks.Together we can make it!
