Dear Friend,
Bangladesh is currently hosting over 929,606 Rohingya refugees, 52 percent of whom are children, in 33 camps in Cox’s Bazar District as well as on Bhasan Char Island. Despite the provision of basic services by UNICEF and partners, Rohingya children face disease outbreaks, malnutrition, inadequate educational opportunities, and risks related to neglect, exploitation and violence, including gender-based violence. However, thanks to your support, UNICEF is continuing to scale up lifesaving interventions for Rohingya refugees with the aim of ensuring that no Rohingya child is left behind.
In June 2022, the Rohingya camps were affected by seasonal monsoon rains, resulting in the partial or complete damage of over 9,540 refugee shelters. In immediate response, UNICEF provided over 9,420 affected families with materials including bamboo, tarpaulins, and rope to assist with shelter repair. In addition, throughout 2022, UNICEF has deployed 1,246 community-based nutrition volunteers who have routinely screened over 87,000 children for acute malnutrition. Through this screening, nutrition volunteers found that 3,079 children were severely acutely malnourished and submitted these children for treatment in UNICEF-supported nutrition facilities. Additionally, in June, a UNICEF-supported vitamin A supplementation campaign reached 141,210 Rohingya children, covering 94 percent of all children aged 6-59 months in all camps.
With your support, UNICEF has also provided access to primary health care services for over 267,600 Rohingya refugees, 42,816 of whom are children under the age of five, through five 24/7 primary healthcare centers and eight health posts. In addition, UNICEF has ensured that 280,589 Rohingya children, including 133,610 girls, continue to receive an education through the established learning centers. Furthermore, as part of a peacebuilding initiative, UNICEF trained 17,516 adolescents (6,819 girls) from the Rohingya community on tolerance, conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Thanks in part to your generosity, Rohingya children and their families are given the opportunity to not only survive with dignity, but also thrive through empowerment. Thank you for your continued support as UNICEF stands alongside this population and continues to advocate for their rights, ensure their wellbeing, and empower their youth.
In partnership,
Whitney
