Summary Greenfoot Africa is a Twende-supported social enterprise empowering local businesses and consumers in Tanzania urban and rural centres to Go Green and work more efficiently. We do this by offering on-demand pickup and delivery services using 100% electric, solar-powered cargo motorbikes accessible through web/mobile-based communication. We positively contribute to the fight against air pollution and global warming and improving efficiency to local supply chains.
Over 40% of Africans live in urban areas where underdeveloped road and public transport infrastructure result in congested cities. Africans have turned to motorcycles for 75% of their transport needs. Although affordability and agility of motorcycles make them ideal for consumers, they emit huge amounts of pollutants: 16 times more hydrocarbons, 3 times more carbon monoxide, and a disproportionately high amount of other air pollutants and greenhouse gases compared to passenger vehicles.
Electric micro-mobility (2 and 3 wheeler) poses as a viable solution but for them to make an impact they need to be powered using clean energy sources such as solar. Greenfoot's pilot project aims to establish a proof of concept for the commercial use of electric vehicles powered by clean energy in urban areas, starting with electric motorcycles powered by solar offering pick-up and delivery services in Arusha, empowering local businesses and consumers to go green and work more efficiently.
Greenfoot Africa's vision is to lead Africa's transition to electric mobility and reduce congestion and pollution in African cities. Empowering African urban and rural centres to Go Green and work more efficiently. Greenfoot is paving the way for African urban and rural centres to adopt clean and sustainable mobility solutions. By adopting a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) business model integrated with IT tools, we are powering the much-needed move towards efficient movement of goods and services.
