Since the beginning of the war, Pontes, our partners in Poland, have been offering Ukrainian women and children a menu of activities tailored at helping them integrate to Polish society and recover from trauma.
As part of the long-term support programme, this project provides women like Liubov bi-weekly Polish language classes, 1:2:1 mentoring, psychological support, employability support, safe spaces for women to meet, cultural activities, information advice and guidance for what is on offer to them in Poland, as well as awareness-rising and support to prevent them from getting into dangerous situations (trafficking, modern-day slavery, abusive landlords and employers).
Liubov’s family experienced traumatic events in Ukraine. Fleeing by car on their way to Kiev, they found themselves under Russian artillery fire. Fortunately, they managed to get to Poland, where they participated in Ponte’s Psychoeducational Summer Camps.
These 5 week-long summer camps provide fun activities and respite from the daily challenges faced, with 3 hours daily of psychosocial support and family sessions with a Ukrainian psychiatrist.
Psychologists working on the camps report that after two or three days, women like Liubov are able to relax for the first time since the war began and start to process their experiences.
“I’m an accountant. In March, I came to Worclaw with my mother and daughter. We fled the war. We are very grateful to the kind-hearted Poles who help us, compassionately supporting us in many ways.”
“Thanks to Pontes I have learned to control my emotions and to find solutions that led to a win-win compromise, instead of arguments.”
Creating support and community, as well as improving language skills, has been essential to Liubov and her family to rebuild their lives. Implementation of educational support in Ukrainian has also helped children like her daughter keep up to date with curriculums, whilst they have been learning Polish.
With gratitude
