Dear HOPE Supporters,
Beijing has been quite hot this summer but that has not stopped the team from working hard! The Spring Session ended and Summer Camps began the first week of July.
This spring HOPE served 22 weekly participants and 11 adults with special needs in our prevocational program. A group from Beijing International School, along with four other schools, established a HOPE Club to help HOPE and local families with children with disabilities. The care, skill and empathy of the HOPE team are inspiring others to embrace folks of all abilities!
HOPE began offering Summer Camp about 10 years ago when we worked with Eliott’s Corner (now LIH Olivia’s Place) to serve children that received therapy at their outpatient clinic. Snipper, our first HOPE horse, and a horse we trained at Grasse Town provided adaptive riding for the campers. Remy and Xiao Zhao, both still part of HOPE, were part of that original summer camp team! Now, our team has grown and the word is out in China that HOPE has a great camp. With no formal advertising, just word of mouth communication among parents, the HOPE camps typically fill up within days of opening registration.
This summer our new pony, Yolk, began working with participants after months of training. She is just the right size - not too tall but stocky enough to carry bigger children. Hei Shan will retire at the end of the summer due to health problems, so the new pony is especially welcome.
Thirty high school students have signed up and been trained to assist Luna, Lucia, and the rest of the team during camp. Activities include horsemanship lessons, adaptive riding sessions, art, singing, scavenger hunts, and lunch. The day typically ends by saying goodbye to, and thanking, the horses and rest of the team.
HOPE is grateful to our supporters. It “takes a village” to offer equine-assisted services at HOPE since program fees do not cover the cost of our expenses. Thank you for being part of our village!
Thank you for your support,
Priscilla Lightsey
