Inclusive education for children with disabilities

Executive Summary

This report outlines the urgent need and proposed interventions for inclusive education targeting around 300 children with severe disabilities in our community. These children have been unable to access education due to the lack of appropriate support systems, poverty, and severe disabilities that require specialized care. The project addresses these challenges by constructing an inclusive school equipped with the necessary facilities, professional educators, and healthcare support. The school will also provide habitation and rehabilitation services to meet the children's primary needs.

Introduction

Children with severe disabilities in our community face immense challenges that hinder their access to education. The lack of an inclusive educational environment and the financial incapacity of their families contribute to their marginalization. This project is designed to tackle these issues by creating a comprehensive support system that includes not only education but also healthcare and habitation services.

Problem Statement

The 300 children identified for this project suffer from severe disabilities that have rendered traditional education inaccessible. Their families, already struggling with poverty, are unable to provide the necessary support for their education and rehabilitation. Without intervention, these children are at risk of lifelong exclusion and marginalization, limiting their opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Project Objectives

1. To build an inclusive school: The school will be designed with an accessible environment tailored to the needs of children with severe disabilities.

2. To provide specialized educational materials: Materials will be adapted to cater to various disabilities, ensuring that all children can participate in learning activities.

3. To employ professional teachers: Teachers with training in special needs education will be recruited to provide the necessary support to these children.

4. To offer healthcare services: On-site healthcare will be available to address the medical needs of the children, ensuring they are healthy enough to participate in educational activities.

5. To support habitation and rehabilitation: The project will include habitation facilities and rehabilitation services to cater to the children's daily living and therapeutic needs.

Current Progress

so far, we have raised $425 through the GlobalGiving platform, a modest start towards our goal of $100,000. While this initial amount demonstrates the goodwill of donors, it is insufficient to realize the full scope of the project. We are continuing our fundraising efforts and contacting the global community for further support.

this report highlights the case of a 14-year-old girl with lifelong disabilities in Primary 2, whose school fees have been paid through a generous contribution from globalgiving of 150,000 Rwandan Francs, though this project was designed to construct a school. However, funds are still limited, which is why we decided from the little we got to pay for one Child who was staying at home due to lack of School fees. However, this payment covers only one child out of many with disabilities needing educational support.
