Dear friend,
Our strength lies in a shared vision.
At Yayasan Tunas Aksara, we firmly believe that every teacher possesses a great love for their students. They are driven by a passion for a better future for 'their' children, even though they might not always have all the necessary resources.
We are grateful for the recent opportunities we've had to conduct various helpful interventions in Eastern Indonesia. Our primary focus has been on providing teachers with our effective teaching methods and training them in child literacy. For instance, in the first weeks of June, we successfully trained an additional five teachers who are now fully prepared to use the materials of Saya Suka Membaca in their classrooms. Although the number of 5 extra teachers may seem a bit small, the final result is with impact! Because these 5 teachers will have around 20 students in each class, this means with ‘just’ training 5 teachers we are helping 100 children each year. And in this week we started talks to also offer a new training in a nearby region. We hope to be able to update on that in the next report.
Impact on Teachers, Principals, and Library Managers
Even though we've been running this campaign on GlobalGiving for a year, we've been supporting in this part of Indonesia for a longer time. For example recent study shows us that from 2021 to 2023, in East Nusa Tenggara and Papua provinces, we taught the "Saya Suka Membaca" Curriculum Training to 75 teachers from 26 schools and 5 communities. All the teachers said this training really helped them teach reading better. We also did a 107 mentoringvisits to help the teachers implementing. The report shows us that these visits really improved their teaching. They learned how to plan lessons better, got more excited and confident, and managed their classrooms well for the students. They also used the "Saya Suka Membaca" curriculum in a good way. As you can understand, we're really grateful to share these good results with you!
Next step
We are excited to continue training and mentoring teachers in this region in the next months. As the data shows, this part of Indonesia is still one of the least developed in terms of literacy levels. The work of our charity, as well as that of others, remains crucial. So we will continue to look for opportunities, new programs and partners, so that we can reach as many teachers and children as possible. And if you know anyone who might be interested in supporting this project, or work together, please let us know!
Salam literasi,
Stuart Patience
