Update on Earthquake Relief

Following the last up-date where TDT was pleased to report progress in several locations this report highlights development at the Kikukwe Community in Missenyi District, Kagera Region of Tanzania. The Kikukwe Community leader sent us the following news recently concerning the dispensary staff accommodation following the severe destruction to buildings by the earthquake in September 2016. The Kikukwe Community Chair writes:

We are happy to inform you that we have already accomplished construction of the house to accommodate two staff at the dispensary site as seen in the attached photos. The remaining internal fitting has been handed to the district council to complete the finishing stage.

We thank you again for your support, without your help this structure would have been a dream, without your help bringing the staff residence closer to the dispensary would be a dream. With current accountability we hope the district council will soon oblige their commitment. We don’t have exactly word to tell you but the villagers are very happy as upon completion of the staff house, the night services /emergency will be easy offered. The staff are also happy they will have a decent houses at the site of the dispensary with security and make them easy to attend night emergency.

We promise we will continues make follow up to the district council for the speed accomplishment of the finishes to the building.

Update on earthquake rebuilding

Welcome back to TDT's reports on the earthquake recovery support, made possible by GlobalGiving donors.

We are delighted to report that as time moves on the progress of rebuilding and resourcing communities which requested assistance is being completed. The major impact of the earthquake in Missenyi District resulted in applications for more substantial help from Kikukwe Community for the dispensary buildings and staff accommodation, and Tweyambe School following its very severe destruction. We are pleased to report on progress at both these Missenyi District locations.

Bwana Mayanda of the Kikukwe Community sent the following message, photos and building information which we are pleased to share here.

Greetings from Kikukwe.
The dispensary staff house construction is going smoothly, up to now we have accomplished the foundation stage, including the concrete floor. The district engineer has visited the construction and given a go ahead to the next stage which is raising the walls up to lintel stage. We thank you again for your support to this initiative.

Attached with this report are photos of the foundation and floor stage described above. The care taken with this major redevelopment is reflected in the references to the requirement to consult with and be advised by the District Engineers department, which will enable the building to be more resistant to earthquake movement in the future.

Tweyambe School has similarly made much progress with the recovery building programme. Following completion of the classroom work and staff house repairs, recent photos received from the school show the ventilated pit latrines building which collapsed into the pits now rebuilt and in full use by the students. The dormitory building, shown in our last report at the roofing rafter stage is also now completed and this essential part of student accomodation is similarly in full use. The school and its staff send much grateful thanks to all Global Giving donors.

Sadly the earthquake damage stories continue to emerge. TDT has received further news about remote Lugoye Government Secondary School, also in the badly affected Missenyi District near Tweyambe, which is struggling to find enough resources to repair three damaged classrooms. TDT would like to be able to assist this school with its earthquake recovery so that the students can return to their lessons in these important classrooms. We hope to publish photos of this damage soon.

We are seeking funding for Lugoye School classrooms of £3150. Update and good news on progress

Nayailigamba students with new gas supply

Kikukwe Dispensary was particularly badly hit by the earthquake in Kagera Region. Our previous report outlined the initial response by TDT to repair the badly cracked dispensary buildings, replace the water tank stand and re-build staff accommodation after village houses were destroyed.

The following message has just been received from Frederick, Kikukwe community officer.

To all at TDT: Greetings from Kikukwe. For the dispensary building the Council engineer approved our masonry repairs and by now we have painted the whole building in including windows, doors and floor. For the water stand our designs have also been approved the district council further provide us alternative designs for us to have a wide selection. Construction will start soon as the heavy rain period is near its end. The council engineer has provided us the new designs for the two in one staff house, We are in planning process of mobilising materials and selection of the masonry.

The Kikukwe community express again their heartfelt thanks to all our generous donors.

Nayailigamba Secondary School, an extremely well run and successful school, whilst experiencing minor cracking damage was placed under great pressure in accepting additional students from badly damaged schools nearby. TDT, with the generous support of Global Giving donors, has been able to provide additional resources including a secure bottled gas supply for the larger numbers of students in science and additional equipment in computing courses. Mwalimu Archard, Headteacher writes: We real appreciate your suport and it's our expectation that these facilities will help a lot our students in the improvement of our academic performance to our Students

Kibirizi Secondary School suffered minor cracking but most severe was the damage to the rainwater harvesting tank. The school received funds from the Global Giving appeal to rebuild and repair rainwater harvesting infrastructure and more secure storage cupboards for delicate science equipment. These are currently under construction.

Tweyambe School continues its rebuilding and our next update will include photos of completed dormitory accommodation following the peviously reported damage and fire.
