From exclusion to empowerment

By Rachel Carle | Development Associate

Before the conflict, Rahaf and her family were happy in Syria. They were in their own home, she said, “living a daily life routine where I was safe, my children were safe too.”

Then, everything changed. After violence erupted in Dar’a, Syria, they fled. She said, “We had seen enough and it was time to seek safety”. They stayed on the borders for four days, and then Al Zaatari refugee camp in Mafraq for six months, before finding a new home in Zarqa.

When Rahaf arrived in Jordan, she joined a women’s circle – one of 20 women’s circles that ActionAid is supporting across Jordan and Lebanon for Syrian refugees and host communities. Here, Rahaf was able to meet other women going through similar and difficult experiences, build community, and plan for this new chapter of her family’s life.

Here, every woman is a leader. The women of the group decide together how to focus their energy and time. They agreed that what they needed most was to make money to support their families.

It was especially tough for Rahaf to make ends meet – her husband and oldest son were both sick. She told us, “We pay for the house rent with the money from the UNHCR, they will cut off the money soon and there is no other resources so I am looking for a job, because the house owner will kick us out if we don’t pay the rent.”

With your support, Rahaf and her friend Lina were able to gain the skills they needed - and now, they have their own successful business! They produce and sell cheese and yogurt, providing great food to their neighborhood. Rahaf said, “Especially as the traditional concept of women working was not seen as acceptable … the idea of me working and earning money was developed and encouraged through the women’s circles I attend.”

Thank you for helping Rahaf as she supports her family and stands up for women’s rights in her new community! Your donation truly makes a difference.
