Project Report | Apr 6, 2023
April 2023, Update from Tanzania

By Karin Joseph | Head of Partnerships & Gender

To date, the Cheka Sana team has contacted almost 150 young mothers in the street through street outreach (day and night). Of these, 72 young mothers and at risk groups were integrated into the project activities, and 45 are still involved in the project actively, attending activities and continuing to receive psychosocial support.

In the last three months, 10 girls have been linked up by Cheka Sana with essential health screening services for more checkups, including HIV screening. They received advice and support on HIV prevention and looking after their sexual health. The Cheka Sana team continue to follow up with the girls in their programme to ensure they can continue accessing information on sexual reproductive health.

In the last three months, 10 young women have been empowered with a start-up kit and training to run their own small businesses, including selling silver-fish and running small cafe-style food businesses. 15 more young women from the StreetBorn programme are being assessed currently with the intention of receiving start-up kits in the next 3 months themselves.

All the young mothers involved in the StreetBorn programme receive one-to-one support on a weekly basis. In addition, seven group sessions were delivered in the last three months as part of the life skills programme, supporting them to increase their self-awareness, confidence and knowledge on issues like sexual health, family planning and contraception, and violence. 12 girls accessed family planning and contraception services after these sessions. ll girls and child mothers are aware about all issues about violence and its types as few of them a good ambassadors in the community and their families. One participant shared that she'd been sharing what she had learnt with others: "I have been advising other girls who are not involved in this project, on the importance of using family planning and also seeing the importance of leaving the sex work business"". Another shared the impact of past self-defence sessions on her confidence and ability to protect herself:  “I always meet young men, many of them have bad intentions of wanting to attack me, especially at night when I leave my business, but I always use the techniques I have learned and run away from them”.

Thank you for your ongoing support for Amos Trust and Cheka Sana's Street Born programme.
