Our newest project empowers kids through the arts!

By Ellie Hunja | Fundraising Coordinator

From all of us here at CHOSA, we hope you're having a lovely week!

Today, we want to introduce you to our newest partner project - Kids Theatre!

Kids Theatre is an afterschool program in Klapmuts, engaging 20 children in skills development and creative expression. Based at Klapmuts Primary School, the program engages children in musical instruments, drama, theatre productions, singing, composing, writing, and other forms of creative expression. The children actively participate in the writing and choreography of productions, which reflect South Africa's cultural climate and incorporate their personal stories and voices. Kids Theatre has showcased its performances in small theatres across the Cape, highlighting the talents and perspectives of the young participants.

They are currently working on three productions in the after-school program. One production will be completely written, directed, and choreographed by the children. The facilitators are doing an incredible job of guiding the writing and development process, ensuring that the students are fully engaged and participating so that their voices are centered in every aspect of the production.

Since CHOSA began providing capacity-building support to Kids Theatre last July, they have become registered as a non-profit and have recruited new, active board members. Last December, CHOSA awarded them a once-off grant of $315 to provide supplies for a community fundraiser, which was a huge success! We are also currently helping them build their own website so that they can continue to spread the word about their incredible work. The project will soon be applying for monthly grant support from CHOSA, and we look forward to continuing to help them grow their impact in their local community.
