This project will provide financial support for our three key neonatal clinical trainers in eastern Uganda. Our neonatal specialist doctor and two neonatal clinical officers provide free medical care for over 2000 sick and premature babies every year. They run regular training courses in basic newborn care in surrounding district hospitals and lower level health facilities and provide ongoing support supervision visits to ensure sustainability and lead improvements in standards of care.
Every month we treat 200 of the sickest and smallest babies in the only neonatal unit in the eastern region of Uganda. At any time, there are around 50 tiny newborn lives in the hands of our neonatal specialist and clinical officers on the ward. Their leadership, training and mentoring alongside the local nursing staff has seen the number of newborn babies who die in the hospital drop from 52% to 10%. Without their continuing support and supervision, hundreds of babies would die unnecessarily.
This project will support two clinical officer trainers and our neonatal specialist doctor. They provide their services to patients and the hospital for free and without this support would have to find a different paid job. In addition, our team provides regular training courses in basic newborn care and newborn resuscitation to staff in lower level health facilities. These courses, alongside regular support supervision visits leads to better standards of care for all babies in eastern Uganda.
Providing financial support for these three critical members of our training team will lead to high quality newborn care for over 2400 sick and premature babies in our specialist neonatal unit and save over 900 lives. In addition it will save the lives of countless babies born in lower level health facilities who would otherwise not receive the standard of care they deserve. The project will allow our trainers to give over 100 nurses, doctors and midwives knowledge and skills in newborn care.
