When this fundraiser began last year, Nafasi was facing major budget shortages and we turned to the community to ask for help. We were worried about making it through the end of the year. Little did we know the challenges that 2020 would bring. But we were so heartened by the generosity of friends from around the world who believed in our work, that we went into those challenges head on, with commitment and dedication to finding a way to continue to support artists and create access to the arts for the public. During the COVID pandemic, that meant closing down Nafasi to the public and shifting our programming online. It meant postponing planned international artist exchanges, and finding innovative ways to keep conversations and networks active and alive. But we were lucky to be able to begin a phased re-opening in July, and that overall, we made it through the most difficult months in tact.
We are excited to announce that the Swiss Embassy to Tanzania has recently joined Nafasi as a partner, and will be providing funding that will allow Nafasi to offer sub-grants to a number of smaller arts and culture organisations and practitioners who are creating innovative work that reaches the public in creative ways. Our Nafasi Academy programme will soon also see the graduation of its first co-hort of 13 young artists who are already creating powerful and moving work. And we are now designing the curriculum for a curatorial and arts management training programme to take place in the Academy in 2021.
We thank you for your support so far and ask that you please share our GlobalGiving fundraiser with your friends and networks so we can continue to support artist development and arts access in Tanzania!
