Matènwa Community Learning Center trainers are excited to kick off the school-year this fall with a new cohort of teachers and directors from seven schools here on the island of La Gonave. School gardens are a completely new element for them, so in trainings we have been introducing them to the basics of composting and building planter beds. Trainings are also a chance for Matènwa Institute of Learning staff to demonstrate how to teach these new topics. Instead of sitting in a classroom and listening, teachers and directors head out to Matènwa’s garden for a hands-on experience - the same learning experience they will take back to their students.
To support these schools as they adopt our approaches with their students, we will be walking alongside them for the next two years, including sending agricultural technicians on monthly visits to their gardens and receiving them every month in Matènwa so they can continue to observe a model of these practices in place.
Along with helping each school establish a garden, we also pass on organic, sustainable techniques to six families in the school’s community while providing seeds and tools. As we work to end hunger on La Gonave, we want to do even more to support local farmers in growing enough food to nourish the island’s population of 130,000.
Our latest initiatives aim to address different aspects of a resilient food system, from replenishing nutrients in the soil to providing water access to building attractive, accessible market spaces.
-For under $1,000, we can supply a family with everything they need to start a garden from scratch, including a rainwater catchment system that enables them to have four harvests a year.
-With $4,000, we can build a farm stand, giving hundreds of people a place to buy and sell locally-grown produce. $
-50,000 would mean a solar water well, complete with a pump, water tower, and kiosk, to serve as a water source for multiple communities.
Gonavians have been dreaming of food sovereignty for a long time. A little support from you can accelerate a cycle in which they leverage their own resources - their land, labor, and local ties - to sustain their community. Please invest with us to make this long-term vision possible today.
