Dear GEC community,
We hope you are all having a restful holiday season and spending time with loved ones. In the spirit of spreading joy, we want to share an update on our student leaders and what they have been up to in our changemaker programming.
This past September with our students we focused on The Importance of Technology in Child Education and Development. Mr. Kenneth Broni, a highly successful engineer, was our main speaker. In addition to his work as a Network Engineer and Lecturer, Mr. Broni started the KenBroTech YouTube channel where he teaches computer programming, software development, and machine learning.
He spoke to our students about his personal career journey, the importance of technology and why our students should be IT literate. He explained several job opportunities in the field such as a Graphic designer or Data analyst and laid out some IT skills they should acquire at their age. He encouraged our students to develop and pursue their passion for technology. One GEC scholar in JHS 3 asked where they can begin in acquiring these IT skills.
Mr. Broni responded that it all begins with everything our students are learning in the classroom now. In addition to sharing specific programs, he advised them to take their studies seriously, be curious and ask questions. He encouraged them to "Never stop learning because you cannot learn anything until you're humble enough to know there's something to learn." He also shared some of his reflections on how he maintains a successful mindset. He advised them to not let their success today delay them to complacency tomorrow, don't be comfortable where they are; and to take responsibility by taking advantage of the opportunities they have and building the future they desire.
The interest of our students was definitely spiked to become IT literates. In a comment, a JHS 3 student says he has learned that IT is needed in every field of work. He has decided to start acquiring some typing skills.
We are grateful to Mr. Kenneth Broni for inspiring our students to aspire to greatness and to become IT literate. Our student changemakers are the future and we are so honored to be able to watch them learn and grow. We are also so grateful to our donors and our wider community for making these events possible. Without it, we could not do the work we do.
We hope you all keep learning and growing this year too.
With love and community,
The GEC family
