Support to Victims of Guatemala Volcano Eruption

Summary

This project will support the long-term recovery of families through legal and psychological support to victims of the deadly volcano eruption in Guatemala on June 3rd, 2018. The eruption has killed over 100 people, with many still missing, and has displaced thousands. By partnering with local NGOs who work directly with the hardest hit areas, WJI will provide legal and psychological support to those in greatest need as they begin to reconstruct their lives and overcome trauma.

Challenge

The Fuego volcano eruption sent a lethal mix of rock, ash, and volcanic gas miles into the air, devastating local communities. The death toll increases daily and has risen to over 100 with many still missing. Thousands of people were evacuated and over 1.7 million people were affected by the eruption. In addition to immediate emergency relief assistance, the survivors of this disaster will need long-term support and services in the months ahead as they begin the long process of rebuilding.

Solution

WJI has 7 years of experience in Guatemala providing legal aid and psychological support to families in moments of crisis. WJI will partner with local NGOs to provide free legal counseling and psychological services to those affected by the eruption. In addition to processing the emotional weight of this tragedy, many people will need civil legal aid in order to move forward. WJI will support survivors' mental health and increase access to justice to vulnerable populations after the tragedy.

Long-Term Impact

WJI wants to ensure that after short-term relief efforts subside, the survivors of the Guatemalan eruption continue to receive the resources necessary for rebuilding their lives. By providing legal and psychological counseling to victims, WJI can aid in the long-term recovery effort for those families and communities who are beginning to move forward despite enormous loss.
