Our project will provide restorative, trauma-informed care for 120 male child survivors of human trafficking in Kampala, Uganda. At our Transitional Centre called 'Lighthouse,' we will empower these children to overcome their trauma and rebuild their lives by providing shelter; food and basic necessities; healthcare; trauma counselling; catch-up education; life skills workshops; and recreational activities. Once these boys build enough resilience, they will be reintegrated with their families.
In Uganda, impoverished children migrate to Kampala to find a better life but end up on the streets and are coerced into exploitation. There are over 15,500 street-connected children in Uganda, with 2,600 in Kampala (TIP report, 2021). Most street-connected children are boys who are vulnerable to exploitation. Once they are removed from the streets/exploitation, it is vital they receive trauma-informed care but services for victims of human trafficking, particularly males, are limited in Uganda.
At our Lighthouse, we will address the complex needs of survivors to ensure they recover from their trauma through the provision of shelter; basic necessities; healthcare; trauma counselling; catch-up education; life skills workshops; and recreational activities. We will prepare the children for reunification with their families and follow up for up to 2 years. We are one of the few organisations supporting trafficked boys in Kampala, proving how crucial our project is for these vulnerable boys.
Our Lighthouse serves approximately 120 boys annually. This project will have a life-long impact on the lives of boys who have experienced modern slavery and exploitation as it allows them to end a cycle of poverty and abuse and embark on an exploitation-free journey. By empowering them at the Lighthouse, they will build resilience to withstand any challenges and acquire knowledge and awareness of the tactics employed by traffickers so that they can protect themselves from re-trafficking.
