Visibility and Defense of the Right to Housing

By Maria Silvia Emanuelli | Coordinator

Visibility and advocacy for the Right to Housing

We have promoted materials on HIC-AL's social media to raise awareness of the different obstacles that the most disadvantaged populations face in accessing the human right to housing, as well as some phenomena that have contributed to the worsening of the housing crisis in the country. Additionally, we have opened spaces so that people can learn and share tools, information, and alternatives that allow them to access this right.

This year also marks the third year of activities of the Legal Clinic on Housing Rights "María Luisa Marín". Since its opening, the clinic has continued providing free legal advice and has taken on the legal representation of several cases. One of them refers to the support of various families and tenants who were evicted from a building following a series of renovation works. Through the clinic's support, which includes negotiations with the landlord, contract reviews, and the development of action plans alongside the affected individuals, some families have been able to return to their homes, and work continues to ensure tenants can recover their spaces.

It is also important to mention that some of the cases, with prior agreement from the individuals involved, have been shared on the networks of both HIC-AL and the Clinic to raise awareness and highlight the difficult situation that many people in Mexico City face regarding eviction from their homes, the causes, consequences, and how the Clinic has supported these cases. Specifically, we are working on producing audiovisual capsules containing testimonies from individuals, mostly older women, who are going through these processes, which will be shared through our social media in the coming months.
