Hello,
Thank you for your support of this project. I'm writing to share some updates on our work in Nepal.
In November 2023, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Karnali province in western Nepal, affecting over 200,000 people, with Jajarkot being the hardest-hit area. ActionAid has long worked alongside local partners in Nepal and has facilitated post-eartquake response in years prior.
Currently, ActionAid is responding by providing immediate relief, including medical care and essential supplies, to those most impacted and left vulnerable by this natural disaster. As is the case in any emergency, our focus is on supporting women and children, who are often disproportionately affected during times of crisis, and on cultivating women's leadership and shifting power to local communities and organizations.
Sharmila's Story
Sharmila is one of the women leading the work to construct safe spaces and advocate for the rights and needs of women and other groups that have been marginalized. During the earthquake, she lost her house and suffered injuries. Along with other members of her community she recognized the lack of safe spaces for women and adolescent girls to share their traumatic experiences. Together, with ActionAid and local partners, they worked to challenge the patriarchal norms, where women’s voices are often silenced, and set out to establish a safe space as a sanctuary to heal and acquire knowledge and skills to amplify women’s voices.
She said, "I believe in my group and the effort we are making right now to construct women’s safe spaces… The few classes we got from temporary safe spaces have widened our knowledge towards women's rights and also gave us a platform to share our
challenges faced during the post-earthquake period.“
Through their unwavering determination and advocacy, Sharmila’s group have emerged as powerful agents of change, steering their community towards a more inclusive and resilient future.
Your generosity has fueled our relief efforts and has helped support and bolster the agency of women like Sharmila, and their communities.
Thank you!
