Since Hurricane Harvey struck Texas as a Category 4 hurricane in early August, UNICEF USA has been working with city government and the Houston Independent School District to get children back to school, as well as provide the long-term emotional support they need. So far, UNICEF USA has supplied teachers with kits for 420 affected classrooms. These kits help make sure children can get back to learning as quickly as possible. In addition, UNICEF USA has worked with local organizations to train 60 facilitators, who in turn will train 6,500 educators, to recognize trauma and provide emotional support to at least 50,000 students in Houston’s most vulnerable communities. Together, these efforts are equipping children with the physical and emotional tools they need to recover. Stay tuned for more updates!
