Empowering Survivors through Technical skills

By Mercy Otieno | Head of Protection

At Awareness Against Human Trafficking (HAART), we are dedicated to empowering survivors of human trafficking through comprehensive support and training programs. One of our key initiatives focuses on providing technical education training, equipping survivors with the skills and knowledge necessary for sustainable livelihoods and independence.

The primary objective of our Technical Education Training Program is to empower survivors by:

  • Offering training in vocational skills in barbering, dreadlock installation, pedicure, manicure hairdressing and catering among other courses to enhance employability.
  • Integrating trauma-informed practices into the support to aid in the healing process and promote holistic recovery.

The trainingsarestructured to provide survivors with:

  • Hands-on sessions and theoretical modules tailored to the needs and interests of participants.
  • Guidance from experienced trainers
  • Partnering with local businesses to facilitate job placements or support survivors in launching small enterprises.

During this reporting 4 survivors are currently enrolled in technical education training. The participants report enhanced self-esteem and confidence, crucial for rebuilding their lives post-trafficking.

While our program has been successful, we recognize ongoing challenges such as funding limitations and the need for continuous adaptation to meet evolving survivor needs. Looking forward, we aim to expand our reach, enhance curriculum flexibility, and forge new partnerships to sustain and amplify our impact.

We believe in the transformative power of education and skill development in empowering survivors of human trafficking. Through our Technical Education Training Program, we are committed to nurturing resilience, fostering independence, and paving the way for a brighter future for survivors.

Join us in supporting survivors on their journey to recovery and empowerment. Your contribution can make a lasting difference in the lives of those affected by trafficking. Together, we can build a more inclusive and resilient society.
