In the current quarter, and despite the numerous effects of the pandemic, Esperanza Urbana has continued to support a number of people from the streets of San Jose, Costa Rica, in the Rehabilitation Center Generaciones Victoria. Due to the dynamic nature of rehabilitation, that number fluctuates frequently with people finishing, starting, commencing employment etc. However, we are currently supporting 9 men, with 2 new men joining the center in May. Furthermore, 2 other men left the center, found jobs and are on their way to reaching their goals outside of the center.
Like the rest of the world, the pandemic has affected the rehabilitation center, but they have taken things in stride and implemented the health and hygienic measures recommended by the Costa Rican Ministry of Health.
To that end, some of the usual activities have been cancelled or postponed but many are still going on. Namely, the participants have attended therapy sessions and education workshops. They also did some community work when it was possible with follow social distancing guidelines. They were able to make improvements to the building and grounds of the rehabilitation center (see photos), namely the irrigation system and painting of the center’s buildings.
Pedro, David and Mauricio are three of the men currently living and getting support in the rehab center:
Pedro is 39 years old and was recently homeless, sleeping on the streets in the prostitution area of San José, Costa Rica. Pedro has a long history of drug abuse; he does not have a family and has severe health problems. The center is accompanying him in his recovery process with a view on his return to society, since he has a lot of promise: he speaks two languages and has many other talents.
David is 40 years of age and has had serious alcohol problems for most of his life. However, he has had a successful recovery process with the support of the center and now has many objectives and goals. He has already managed to get his children to accept him again, and they now visit him regularly.
Mauricio is a 25-year-old adult, homeless and addicted to drugs, but looking for an opportunity to change his life. He is inspired to elevate himself by his partner, who is also homeless. They are currently expecting a baby therefore the support of the center and Esperanza Urbana will be crucial as they recover and plan for the future of their family.
These are only 3 short stories but they illustrate the efforts required but also the resilience of these men and their community. Esperanza Urbana thanks you for your continued support. We are well on our way to reaching our goals and we have all of you to thank for that.
