In the current quarter, Esperanza Urbana has continued to support a number of people from the streets of San Jose in the Rehabilitation Center Generaciones Victoria. Due to the dynamic nature of rehabilitation, these numbers fluctuate frequently with people finishing, starting, commencing employment etc. However, we are presently supporting with the various resources we have, between 10 to 15 males on a monthly basis.

People going through the rehabilitation process begin their journey by working with IAFA (Costa Rica's Drug and Alcohol institute) where they will be provided with an adapted and medically supervised detoxification process.

Once detox is completed, the young men we are supporting can begin their nine month rehabilitation journey. During this time, people in the center receive therapies and educational workshops including:

  • Narcotics Anonymous
  • Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Computer Skill Building
  • Cooking Classes
  • Language Skills
  • Music skills and therapy
  • Horticultural skills

As some people begin to complete their treatment with Generaciones de Victoria, they enter into the next phase: Casa Media. In this phase, the managers of Generaciones Victoria support their reinsertion back into society and help maintain recovery. The objectives of this program are:

  • Promote and maintain independence
  • Empower people to participate in daily life activities and maintain their recovery
  • Help them find employment that provides financial security and confidence

Oscar's Story

Oscar's case is special (see photos) - Seven months ago our President interviewed Oscar in downtown San Jose, and he wasn't quite at the stage of readiness to begin rehab. At that time, he was denied begining the program. Later we met Oscar again and continued the interview process. It was decided to give him a 15 day trial at the rehab center to see if it could be a good fit. Seven months later, Oscar is well, clean and sober. We are so proud of Oscar's accomplishments.

Thank you for your continued support of Esperanza Urbana’s Rehabilitation Project! Because of you, Oscar,  and many others are able to work towards recovery and re-entering society with the skills necessary to be successful.

Lets continue to plant a seed of hope, together.
