STEAM Education in Rural Communities

Punto Crea is the initiative that brings STEAM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education to rural communities in Guatemala, in order to empower young people to develop their technical skills in STEAM and socio-emotional skills to continue their academic studies and/or to start their own business. Even though there is a lack of meeting and recreation spaces for young people in the communities, the Punto Crea team has secured spaces where young beneficiaries can creatively develop their ideas or projects.

Responding to rural needs – and thanks to your generous donations – we have recently strengthened our inter-institutional relationship with the organization New Sun Road (NSR), which implements Digital Community Centers (DCCs) in the communities of the Guatemala highlands. These are solar-powered, internet-enabled computing centers that serve people living in isolated communities without electricity, providing them with digital leadership, entrepreneurial skills, and awareness of gender-based violence. Now the community of Sacoyou, in the municipality of Cobán, Alta Verapaz department, will have the services of Punto Crea to strengthen the DCC, with training opportunities for volunteers tutors, who will serve the young participants with learning activities based on STEAM challenges. Teachers will have the opportunity to bring STEAM challenges into their classrooms and other members of the community will have access to information through the Rachel Digital Library.

The engagement of volunteer tutors has also been important in the implementation of the Puntos Crea. Fredy Ceto is a volunteer tutor who has obtained the endorsement of the Municipality of Nebaj Quiché, so that Punto Crea continues to support the training of STEAM tutors in the municipality and the formation of communities of young creators. The Municipality, for its part, has committed to assigning a physical space to carry out activities that will benefit young people and teachers in the municipality.

Thanks to your constant support, in Nebaj and other municipalities, a range of opportunities opens up for young people, who will be able to design their STEAM projects and/or business prototypes from a learning and testing process framed in the STEAM challenges.
