Punto Crea - Creative Youth Makers in Guatemala!

May you have had a happy holiday season! Helping youth experience STEAM in their communities means bringing together multiple elements around the youth participants: educational content, effective methods, high- and low-tech tools, assessment tools, a venue, and more. But it is the tutors that make the whole thing come alive! Community volunteers and/or institutional staff who value the importance of young people learning about the STEAM areas, share Punto Crea's aims and know how to plan and facilitate learning processes, this is the core of making Punto Crea work.

This is why training volunteer tutors is at the heart of Punto Crea's institutional work. Let me share an example. In November, Ismael and Luis led a workshop with staff from Asociación para el Desarrollo y la Paz (ADP), Asociación Renacimiento, and Childfund offices in Guatemala and Honduras to learn how to use the new Punto Crea metodology incorporated into Childfund's PACTO program.

The workshop included two main parts: first, building empathy by having the tutors experience what participating youth would encounter in the methodology. And second, a more detailed review of Punto Crea's methods. This illustrates a very important aspect of Punto Crea: it brings together specific practices and awareness for the situation of participating youth.

¡Que hayas tenido unas felices fiestas! Ayudar a la juventud a experimentar STEAM en sus comunidades significa reunir múltiples elementos en torno a los jóvenes participantes: contenido educativo, métodos efectivos, herramientas de alta y baja tecnología, herramientas de evaluación, un lugar físico o virtual, y más. ¡Pero son los tutores los que hacen que todo cobre vida! El núcleo para que Punto Crea funcione es contar con voluntarios comunitarios y/o personal institucional que valoren la importancia de que los jóvenes aprendan sobre las áreas STEAM, compartan los objetivos de Punto Crea y sepan planificar y facilitar procesos de aprendizaje.

Es por esto que la formación de tutores está en el centro del trabajo institucional de Punto Crea. Permítanme compartir un ejemplo. En noviembre, Ismael y Luis dirigieron un taller con personal de la Asociación para el Desarrollo y la Paz (ADP), la Asociación Renacimiento y las oficinas de Childfund en Guatemala y Honduras para aprender a utilizar la nueva metodología Punto Crea incorporada al programa PACTO de Childfund.

El taller incluyó dos partes principales: primero, generar empatía, haciendo que los tutores experimentaran lo que los jóvenes participantes encontrarían en la metodología. Y segundo, un repaso más detallado de los elementos metodológicos de Punto Crea. Esto ilustra un aspecto muy importante de Punto Crea: reúne prácticas específicas y concientización sobre la situación de los jóvenes participantes.
