January is almost gone, but it's still time to thank you for your unflagging support throughout 2022. Together may we continue to help young people in Guatemala be the best version of themselves possible.

The year finished with achievements, and challenges! Punto Crea's Usaid funding under the Puentes Project has finally come to its end, which means ensuring that Punto Crea can continue to operate sustainably. In particular, this requires that it have the means to go after funding and work opportunties, not just that it be able to work with youth. Fortunately, accomplishing this was part of our 2022 plan! Let me share three with you three highlights on what we did about it:

In February a group of the Punto Crea technical team bought Vitruvian Consulting de Guatemala, S. A., the entity formally in charge of implementing the Punto Crea under Puentes. Over the year they gradually took over leadership fof Punto Crea and are now fully empowered and independent entrepreneurs seeking funding and providing technical support to the Punto Crea groups in each community. Please join me in wishing the team led by Luis Quino and Ismael Pecher the best luck in this, and pat yourself on the back: not only are you directly contributing donations to young Guatemalans, but also indirectly encouraging Guatemalans to build real business and employment opportunities that focus on their communities.
Over the year, 12 Puntos Crea operated in 5 departments in the Guatemalan Highlands and also in Guatemala City. Over the last quarter of the year volunteer community tutors, leaders and youth in them were encouraged to organize to ensure continuity of their Punto Crea after the end of their USAID funding, with an enthusiastic response in 8 of these communties. I really hope you will help us keep these groups running and in operation. Please help me spread the word and encourage new donors among your friends, family and colleagues. We updated the Punto Crea website, which serves as the one-stop-shop for information, but also for educational resources —the STEAM learning challenges— used by participating youth. Be sure to have a look at it and learn more about the great people and activities that make Punto Crea real.

Enero casi se ha ido, pero aún es tiempo de agradecer tu apoyo incansable durante todo el 2022. Confío que juntos podamos continuar ayudando a los jóvenes en Guatemala a ser la mejor versión posible de sí mismos.

El año terminó con logros y también desafíos. La financiación de Usaid para Punto Crea en el marco del Proyecto Puentes finalmente ha llegado a su fin. Esto significa que hoy sin duda debemos garantizar que Punto Crea pueda continuar operando de manera sostenible. En particular, requiere que Punto Crea tenga los medios para buscar financiamiento y oportunidades de trabajo, no solo que pueda trabajar con jóvenes. Afortunadamente, lograr esto era parte de nuestro plan para 2022. Permíteme compartir contigo tres aspectos destacados de lo que hicimos al respecto:

En febrero, un grupo de miembros del equipo técnico de Punto Crea compró Vitruvian Consulting de Guatemala, S. A., la entidad formalmente encargada de implementar Punto Crea bajo Puentes. A lo largo del año asumieron paulatinamente el liderazgo de Punto Crea y ahora son emprendedores totalmente empoderados e independientes, que buscan financiamiento y brindan apoyo técnico a los grupos Punto Crea en cada comunidad. Únete a mí para desearle al equipo liderado por Luis Quino e Ismael Pecher la mejor de las suertes en esto, y felicítate: no solo estás contribuyendo directamente con donaciones a guatemaltecas y guatemaltecos jóvenes, sino también indirectamente alentando a los guatemaltecos a construir negocios reales y oportunidades de empleo que se enfocan en sus comunidades.
Durante el año operaron 12 Puntos Crea en 5 departamentos del altiplano guatemalteco y también en Ciudad de Guatemala. Durante el último trimestre del año, se animó a los tutores voluntarios, líderes y jóvenes de las comunidades a organizarse para garantizar la continuidad de su Punto Crea después del final de su financiamiento de USAID. La respuesta fue más que entusiasta en 8 de estas comunidades. Realmente espero que nos ayudes a mantener estos grupos en funcionamiento. Por favor, ayúdame a correr la voz y animar a nuevos donantes entre tus amistades, familiares y colegas. Our first national meeting / Nuestro 1er encuentro nacional

At last! On August 24-26, 2022 we held our first Punto Crea National Meeting in Guatemala City. After a wait of 2 years due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Meeting was an opportunity for the whole Punto Crea family to come together, including 13 youth creators, 19 volunteer tutors, 3 volunteer community leaders, 2 teachers from the educational system and representatives of all our partners: World Vision Guatemala, World Possible, Publisoluciones and Artzénico. And of course, the whole Punto Crea team was also there.

After 5 years working in each of the Guatemalan highland departments and with so much time spent online, meeting in person was a unique experience that allowed our young participants, tutors, and facilitators to come together, share, and learn from their experiences with Punto Crea throughout Guatemala.

We had keynote speakers, including Erick Barrondo, the Guatemalan Olympic walking medalist; our founders; and representatives of World Vision and the USAID Puentes Project. All of them motivated our youth participants to continue growing and contributing through Punto Crea.

The young people also had the opportunity to visit institutions that promote STEAM learning and the maker spirit, including the TEC center in zone 4 in Guatemala City and the Technological Innovation Center of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Here they experienced firsthand learning models that foster open and innovative creation.

This first meeting was a blast! It has marked the lives of the young people in our communities and was a moment for us all to identify as a family, establish new friendships and form stronger alliances. Above all, it made us all proud to be part of Punto Crea.

Your constant contribution over the last 3 years has been essential for us to make it this far. And now we need to go further! Please share this story with your family, friends and colleagues, and encourage them to be part of our community too. We need many more people like you supporting us if we are to reach the many young people who need these opportunities. Once again, thank you!

Del 24 al 26 de agosto del 2022 se realizó nuestro primer Encuentro Nacional Punto Crea 2022 en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Luego de esperar 2 años debido a la pandemia por covid-19, el Encuentro fue una reunión de toda la familia Punto Crea de Guatemala. Participaron 13 Jóvenes Creadores, 19 Tutores Voluntarios, 3 líderes comunitarios voluntarios, 2 docentes del sistema educativo y representantes de nuestros socios: Visión Mundial Guatemala, Asociación Mundo Posible, Publisoluciones y Artzénico. Por supuesto, también estuvo presente todo el equipo de Punto Crea.

Luego de 5 años de trabajo en los departamentos del altiplano guatemalteco y con tanto tiempo pasado de forma virtual, encontrarnos fue una experiencia única que permitió a jóvenes, tutores y facilitadores conocerse, compartir y aprender de las experiencias de los Punto Crea de toda Guatemala.

Contamos con conferencias relevantes para los jóvenes, incluyendo al medallista olímpico de marcha, Erick Barrondo, nuestros fundadores, y representantes de Visión Mundial y del Proyecto Puentes de USAID, quienes también motivaron a los jóvenes a seguir creciendo y aportando a través de Punto Crea.

Los jóvenes tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar instituciones que promueven el aprendizaje STEAM y el espíritu maker, incluyendo el centro TEC de zona 4 en Ciudad de Guatemala y el Centro de Innovación Tecnológica de la Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, donde pudieron experimentar de primera mano modelos de aprendizaje y creación abiertos e innovadores.

Este primer Encuentro fue una fiesta de Punto Crea que ha marcado la vida de los jóvenes de nuestras comunidades. Fue un momento para sentirnos identificados como familia, establecer nuevas amistades y formar alianzas. Sobre todo, nos hizo a todos orgullosos de ser parte de Punto Crea.

Tu contribución constante durante los últimos 3 años ha sido esencial para llegar hasta aquí. ¡Y ahora vamos por más! Por favor, comparte esta historia con tu familia, tus amistades y colegas, y aliéntalos a ser ellos también parte de nuestra comunidad. Theater is a powerful learning experience

Punto Crea is about STEAM education. This means providing learning oportunities in the sciences, technology, engineering, arts and math. But it's easy to lose track of the A in STEAM! However, the arts are every bit as powerful as technology, the sciences or mathematics to develop the mind in young people.

In Punto Crea we have bet on using theater as our point of entry into the arts. But not only is theater an art in itself, but it provides opportunities to develop, apply and integrate competences across the whole curriculum in ways that are fun and make real-world sense.

In the theater Young people can write (scripts), paint (backdrops, scenery, posters), try their hands with a variety of technologies (lighting, sound), work with numbers (estimate costs, calculate income), exercise their body and develop confidence in front of a crowd, and of course, express their thoughts and feelings about the world around them!

In Artzenico — a Quetzaltenango-based theater school and experiemental theater group we have found a great partner for this. Over the last semester Artzenico's team has been developing a team of Punto Crea teater coordinators, young people that commit to leading and organizing theater groups in their own communities. Using our challenge-based learning methodology they invite them to find topics of interest and significance and address them through a variety of theatrical methodologies. Young people love it!

As ever, doing this is only possible because of our funding partners. A big part of funding for it comes from institutional grantors, but it is the small individual gifts — yes, this means you! — that give us the flexibility to take chances, reach out to partners like Artzenico and to keep expanding the envelope of what it means to foster creative youth makers.

El teatro es una poderosa experiencia de aprendizaje

Punto Crea es educación STEAM. Esto significa brindar oportunidades de aprendizaje en ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería, artes y matemáticas. ¡Pero es fácil perder el rastro de la A en STEAM! Sin embargo, las artes son tan poderosas como la tecnología, las ciencias o las matemáticas para desarrollar la mente de los jóvenes.

En Punto Crea hemos apostado por utilizar el teatro como nuestra puerta de entrada a las artes. Pero el teatro no solo es un arte en sí mismo, sino que brinda oportunidades para desarrollar, aplicar e integrar competencias a todo lo ancho del currículo de manera divertida y con sentido del mundo real.

En el teatro, los jóvenes pueden escribir (guiones), pintar (fondos, decorados, carteles), probar suerte con una variedad de tecnologías (iluminación, sonido), trabajar con números (estimar costos, calcular ingresos), ejercitar su cuerpo y desarrollar confianza frente a una multitud y, por supuesto, ¡expresar sus pensamientos y sentimientos sobre el mundo que los rodea!

En Artzenico, una escuela de teatro y grupo de teatro experimental con sede en Quetzaltenango, hemos encontrado un gran socio para esto. Durante el último semestre, el equipo de Artzenico ha estado desarrollando un equipo de coordinadores de teatro de Punto Crea, jóvenes que se comprometen a liderar y organizar grupos de teatro en sus propias comunidades. Usando nuestra metodología de aprendizaje basada en desafíos, los invitan a encontrar temas de interés y significado y abordarlos a través de una variedad de metodologías teatrales. ¡A los jóvenes les encanta!

Como siempre, hacer esto solo es posible gracias a nuestros socios financieros. Una gran parte de la financiación proviene de donantes institucionales, pero son las pequeñas donaciones individuales, sí, ¡esto significa usted! — que nos dan la flexibilidad para arriesgarnos, encontrar a socios como Artzenico y seguir ampliando el alcance de lo que significa fomentar a los jóvenes creadores creativos.
