Project Update In the first phase of the project, peasant organization AFKB, produced 60,000 seedlings. About 2/3 or 40,000 seedlings planted as young trees survived! The second seedling production phase was launched in September 2007, members of the organization worked together to produce 36,000 seedlings. Seedling production includes the preparation of 36,000 bags with soil, organic fertilizers and seeds. In these efforts seedlings for 23,000 fruit trees and 13,000 forest trees were prepared. Of the 36,000 seedlings prepared, 29,365 young trees were distributed to AFKB members and replanted in areas where they would be protected. What remains to be done: • Project Evaluation • Production of 30,000 more seedlings for a total of 120,000 seedlings Project Impact The residents of Bayone benefit from this project, as it helps stabilize the soil of an eroded mountain side. The project’s impact transcends the reforestation effort as it also strengthens AFKB’s ability to manage a project and address unanticipated problems. A stronger organization means that members will be better prepared to address issues and implement activities that will benefit the entire community.
