Our weaving school has now been in session for four months. The students have moved from learning introductory weaving to more complex techniques for making patterns in cloth. Completed projects are piling up in the weaving shed.
Two of the students are showing enough promise that they are being considered for positions in the weaving studio at the national museum. This gets right to the heart of what we are trying to do--training young people to be able to make a living.
Amanda Gilvin, a textile scholar who has studied Nigerien weaving, is making a video about the school and the historical background of tera-tera weaving. She hopes to present it at a conference on African art. We will let you know when the video is available.
