Thank you so much for your support of this project. I’m writing to share some updates from ActionAid’s efforts in the occupied Palestinian territories. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about and act in response to our work.
This past World Environment Day in June, ActionAid supported Palestinian youth to take climate and environmental action. The theme of this year was “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
To celebrate World Environment Day, young Palestinian climate activists participated in an environmental walk in the villages of Battir and Al-Makhrour in the southern West Bank. The goal of this walk was to raise awareness of plastic pollution and educate the community on the importance of using environmentally-friendly items, as plastic is considered one of the largest sources of waste in the region (making up 17% of total waste in the West Bank and 14% in the Gaza Strip) due to barriers to recycling and removal that are a direct result of the occupation.
One youth environmental activist who took part in the walk said: “I participated in the nature walks and gathered plastic garbage to be recycled to mitigate its impact on the environment. We are all responsible for protecting our environment by leading initiatives and campaigns that will mitigate impact of climate change which will negatively affect our future and our children's future.”
ActionAid will continue to support communities in Palestine that are disproportionately impacted by the violence and policies that keep people marginalized. Thank your solidarity and for being in this moment with us, it's never been more crtical.
