Hsiang and Grandma: A Story of Hope and Strength

By Denny Chou | Supervisor, International Mktg Resource Centre

“Is Hsiang’s Grandma here?” Every time the social worker called out, young Hsiang would rush to his grandmother’s side, eagerly announcing the visitor’s arrival and warmly inviting them into their modest home.

Hsiang’s life has been marked by challenges since the day he was born. With his father absent and his mother unable to care for him, it was his grandmother who became his guardian, his rock, and his greatest source of love. Now a first grader, Hsiang faces his own difficulties—born blind in his left eye, he also battles ADHD and developmental delays. Despite these struggles, Hsiang has a heart full of warmth, always eager to share and help others.

From the moment the social worker first visited, Hsiang sought attention, often interrupting conversations between the social worker and his grandmother. But over time, with patient guidance and care, he learned to listen quietly, and he grew in confidence. Each visit became an opportunity for Hsiang to excitedly share his thoughts and drawings, his growth a testament to the encouragement and support he received.

Three years ago, their small family faced a severe blow. A car accident left Grandma unable to work, plunging them into financial hardship. Forced to rely on the meager income she earned from making dumplings, things took a turn for the worse when Grandma was diagnosed with cancer. Despite these challenges, Grandma’s determination never wavered. She sought work, attended daily chemotherapy sessions, and battled the side effects with fierce resilience. But when her condition worsened, leaving her too weak to care for Hsiang, the social workers intervened, arranging temporary care for him so Grandma could focus on her recovery.

During this difficult period, Grandma’s heart was never far from Hsiang. “If only I could get better soon, Hsiang could come home earlier,” she confided to the social worker. “I wonder if he’s eating well, if he’s sleeping okay… if he’s grown a bit.”

Motivated by her desire to reunite with Hsiang, Grandma adhered strictly to her treatment and self-care routine. With regular visits and support from the social workers, who provided essential supplies and a listening ear, she gradually regained her strength and found stable work. Finally, Hsiang was able to return home, and the two were joyfully reunited.

But their relief was short-lived. During a recent check-up, Grandma received the devastating news that her cancer had returned, now in its fourth stage. Undeterred, she continues her fight, determined to keep the promise she made to Hsiang—to be there as he grows up. Even as she undergoes treatment, she carries her medication with her, battling the disease with all the strength she has left. Inspired by her courage, Hsiang has become her little helper, taking on simple chores and praying fervently for her recovery.

Though still young, Hsiang understands that his grandmother is his strongest support, the one constant who has always stood by his side. Just as the social workers from the Mustard Seed Mission have been there for them both, Hsiang holds on to the hope that a miracle will allow his grandmother to watch him grow up.

Hsiang’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience found in even the smallest hearts and the strength that comes from unwavering love. The Mustard Seed Mission continues to stand by families like Hsiang’s, ensuring they never face their challenges alone.
