Schools Continues Despite Hardships

By Rachel Isser | Project Leader

World Environment Day
World Environment Day

First of all we want to say a huge THANK YOU to you sponsors who donated on July Bonus Day! Although matching funds ran out by 10AM, we were able to receive a small match fund from GlobalGiving. Our total funds raised were $3,853, which was a bit far off from our goal of $10,000. The important thing is that your donations ensured that our students can continue to study with us despite the economic hardships their families may be facing. Thank you so much!

In general, this has been an incredibly difficult year for the school and foundation. As you may have seen in international news, Ecuador, and particularly the coast where we are, is frequently plagued by narcotrafficking and  violence around us. Our families feel desperate and scared but confident that their children are safe and buffered from the environment around them while studying at Los Algarrobos. We also faced a terrible dengue epidemic in July where about 15 of our students fell sick. Luckily they are all well and healthy now.

Despite these challenges our incredible staff has continued offering enriching activities to our students. On June 5 we had World Environment Day where we celebrated Mother Earth and discussed ways to take care of her. On June 25 we celebrated local culture on Manabitismo Day with dance, song and poetry. In July we had a workshop to prevent sexual abuse and we welcomed members of the Ministry of Environment to learn about the importance of our local Mangrove ecosystems. The parents committee donated soccer balls to each classroom. This all in addition to the routines and activities that our teachers bring with a smile on their faces everyday.

Los Algarrobos is making a huge difference for our families and students. In a world of uncertainty, they know they can depend on us to care for their children and teach them to be responsible global citizens. The challenges mentioned above are making it increasingly difficult to keep our doors open each year. We need your help! In addition to the student you sponsor, please consider a monthly contribution! Any amount will help so much in getting us to our goal of $1000 of monthly donations.

Thank you so much for your continued support!
