Severe flooding in late July and August inundated parts of northern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In Nepal, severe flooding affected nearly half of all districts. Though the water has receded, the aftermath continues to challenge these regions. You have helped raise $150,000 for GlobalGiving’s South Asia Flood Relief Fund. Our vetted nonprofit partners are hard at work rebuilding homes, distributing supplies, and preparing families for winter. One of these partners,Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan, was recently named one of GlobalGiving’s Top 10 Nonprofit Committed To Impact.

All of our partners are putting your donations to good work. Here are some of the ways they are helping affected communities:

Rebuilding homes and livelihoods.Janaki Women Awareness Society (JWAS)will construct five flood-resilient community shelters and install 40 flood-resilient drinking water hand pumps. Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan will build homes for 10 families whose agricultural livelihoods have been disrupted in northwestern India. Nepal Village Foundation, UK is rebuilding homes and providing families with livestock, seeds, clean water, sanitation facilities, and cash grants.

Providing vital emergency supplies.People First Educational Charitable Trust has provided flashlights, candles, food, water purifying kits, and medicines in northeastern India. Backward Society Education (BASE) will distribute hygiene kits, school uniforms, kitchen utensils, blankets, and galvanized iron and bamboo to support home maintenance. They will also provide one raised hand pump installation. Indian Dreams Foundation is providing hygiene kits containing sanitary pads, medicines, and food to women and adolescent girls in northern India. They are also renovating school facilities, and promoting hygiene and sanitation through workshops and capacity-building meetings.

Supporting community-led relief efforts. GOONJinvolves local communities and schools in volunteering and donating supplies. One of their programs involves preparing families for the colder weather ahead with “winter kits.”

Protecting the most vulnerable. Sugam Jagriti is supporting pregnant and lactating mothers, children, and senior citizens in northeastern India with nutritious food, clothing, and blankets. Apne Aap Women Worldwide Trust will build nine permanent mud houses for displaced women and children in northeastern India, with the goal of keeping children safe from sex trafficking.

Your donations are making an impact on communities affected by flooding in South Asia. Thank you for your support.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
