Thank you for your support of SOTENI’s AIDS Barefoot Doctor Program through SOTENI’s Global Giving Campaign; Dare to Join the Fights Against HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
SOTENI empowers tens of thousands of people affected by HIV/AIDS to break the chain of infection and poverty through SOTENI’s innovative and effective AIDS Barefoot Doctors program. AIDS Barefoot Doctors are community health workers dedicated to destigmatizing and supporting people living with HIV/AIDS in underserved, remote villages in rural Kenya.
Between June to September 2019, 18 SOTENI AIDS Barefoot Doctors served 2,820 people living with HIV/AIDS through 141 support groups and direct assistance and referrals. AIDS Barefoot Doctors’ support groups focus on psychosocial therapy, group therapy and education on life skills including HIV prevention and treatment; personal care and health; individual and family hygiene and nutrition; group communication skills; personal banking; and food and water sanitation. AIDS Barefoot Doctors also distribute monthly supplies of water purification packets to participants in the support groups. SOTENI AIDS Barefoot Doctors distributed 84,600 water purification packets from June to September, which equals 846,000 liters of safe drinking water for the families of 2,820 people.
SOTENI’s AIDS Barefoot Doctors also strengthen follow-up systems for district sub-county hospitals. This follow-up ensures patient referrals, the continuation of anti-retroviral treatment and compliance with care plans prescribed by doctors and local hospitals. Overall, AIDS Barefoot Doctors strengthen patient care and healthcare-system governance across all the villages we serve. AIDS Barefoot Doctors is SOTENI’s main programmatic strategy toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Goal (UNSDG) to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
This is only made possible through partnerships and support from individuals and organizations. SOTENI works alongside supporters like you and our Kenyan partners to continue to advance our mission and invest in a better, safer future for the people of Kenya whose lives have been impacted by AIDS.
